Foreland is pleased to announce the addition of Amy Brener’s, Fort-Dress. An outdoor sculpture situated at the peak of our southern parking lot, viewable to the public at the corner of Bridge and Water St. Amy Brener’s Fort-dress is a partial shelter within an abstraction of the female form. Viewers are invited to walk into the back, inhabiting the dress as if wearing it, and look out through its panels made of translucent pink resin panels embedded with an arsenal of functional tools and gadgets. An obvious play on the word fortress, the proposed sculpture is both a partial shelter from the wind, and an abstraction of the female form. From a distance the shape of the sculpture also suggests a beacon, welcoming visitors,When approached viewers are presented with the back of Fort-Dress, which is a partially enclosed shelter. Entering the shelter, viewers inhabit the dress as though they are wearing it, though it is over twice their size.
Fort-Dress is a neon pink fortress that points toward female empowerment andpushes back against standard ideals of safety and security. Fort-Dress doesn't attempt to camouflage itself, nor hide those that enter it. It is unapologetically flamboyant in color and form, while its translucency suggests a vulnerability and openness, promoting new notions of strength and power.
Fort-Dress was originally commissioned by Socrates Sculpture Park, in Queens NYC, 2018. The sculpture will be on view for a year.
