NADA Foreland

NADA is now accepting proposals for participation in a collaborative weekend exhibition at Foreland, featuring artwork installed in Foreland’s multiple historic industrial buildings of Catskill, New York.

In partnership with Upstate Art Weekend, this exhibition will highlight artworks from NADA’s community of galleries, nonprofits, and artists, with a focus on artists working within the Upstate New York region.

The New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is the definitive non-profit arts organization dedicated to the cultivation, support, and advancement of new voices in contemporary art. 

Upstate Art Weekend (UPAW) is a connective annual event, for locals and tourists alike, celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Upstate New York. The fourth edition of UPAW will take place July 21–24, 2023, adding an additional day to the self-guided event.

Foreland Studio Artists Group Show

Candle, 2022

Chris Bogia, "Candle", 2022. The work will be on display as part of Foreland Presents, courtesy of Mrs. Gallery, from March 15 through June 1st, 2023. 

"When I think of mid-Atlantic summer communities like Fishers Island, The Cape of Massachusetts, and Fire Island I think about homes clad in shingles and shutters devoted to the pursuit of leisure with family and friends. A classic shutter motif I love are the kinds with cut-out silhouettes of moons, diamonds, and even candles where function is unapologetically abandoned in favor of ornamental pleasure. The design for Candle emerged from researching these motifs. The sculpture’s form is a dramatically scaled-up replica of an existing shutter design found in my research extruded from 2D to 3D. I chose a palette that invoked seaside confectionaries, clear blue skies, and the faded colors of comfy well-loved beachwear. Visually Candle gently stands out from the natural landscape but pops with optimism and joy to complement the relaxation and revelry found on the island during its peak season. A candle is a timeless domestic instrument – a way to know what is real when the nearby world is obscured by darkness. A lighthouse functions like this too – which is why I decided to make the sculpture, positioned on the water, illuminate at night like a beacon."

Chris Bogia received his BFA at New York University and MFA from Yale University. Bogia was a recent recipient of the Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation Grant; a Queens Council for the Arts, New Works Grant; as well as a Rema Hort Mann Foundation Artist Community Engagement Grant, and the Tiffany Foundation grant. He was also an artist in residence at the Queens Museum Studio Program from 2017-2018. Recent exhibitions include a public project with Art in Buildings in NYC, a solo presentation at Mrs. Gallery, group exhibitions at Hesse Flatow, NYC, Primary, Miami, RUSCHMAN, Chicago, The Public Art Fund, NYC, Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles, Bric, Brooklyn, Mrs. Gallery, The New Museum, and a presentation at NADA with Mrs. Gallery in 2020. Bogia is the co-founder of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), the first LGBTQ artist residency in the world, and was FIAR’s acting director from 2011- 2020. He is currently an instructor of sculpture at New York University.

Here Goes by Theodore Sefcik

Here Goes

JAG Projects is pleased to present a selection of new videos by Theodore Sefcik. To create his video works, Sefcik begins by hand drawing all of his characters and scene elements using an unusual collection of mostly obsolete and vintage software.

Movement is a core element of Sefcik’s artistic vision. Sometimes the scene elements, including animals, humanoids, and inscrutable organic and geometric forms are directly controlled by Sefcik like marionettes. Other times, Sefcik provides his creations with their own methods of locomotion, and allows them to independently waddle, crawl and tumble under their own power using a system of invisible pins, gears and levers.

Sefcik painstakingly selects and edits his favorite scenes and deploys them onto scavenged and refurbished LCD monitors which are each paired with a customized minicomputer video unit to display these choreographed scenes of mirth, mayhem and grace.

Sometimes, a scene will last for an hour, sometimes only a few seconds. The length of time is not as important as whether a certain emotion has been captured and it’s story has been told. Sefcik believes that some stories can only be told by watching a 5 second loop on repeat.

, a group show curated by Jesse Greenberg. Showcasing the works of David Brooks, Nathaniel De Large, Matthew Fischer, Russel Tyler, Susan Wides. With a focus revolving around forms and systems shared between nature and tools of observation.

David Brooks two aluminum cast renderings made from scanned drone footage of now deforested spots in the rainforest reveal tufts of tree tops and lumbering facilities emerging from a spill of aluminum presented on the floor like a memorial plaque.

Nathaniel De Large paper pulp wryley forms, seem like branches. Expressive and reaching, actually double as crude Augmented Reality Phone Cases. When attached to your phone, their branches reach into your camera frame, placing his art in any scene.

Matthew Fischer’s stained glass and oil on panel structures take the sun drenched light of the gallery, refracted through each other and through the room. Framing light and color, harping on musical ouvres, these works suspend something holy yet under identifiable proportions.

Russel Tylers serial formatic paintings look like film stills of a movie about stained glass. Each similar in their system and structure exist in their own harmony of hand, color, and proportional compositions, that could seemingly have endless iterations.

Susan Wides's “Arachnoid” photographic series of extreme close-ups of spider webs intermingled with the camera's internal lens flares and spectral trails present a tiny world where the physical, atomic, and macro all fold into their own indistinguishable field of abstract structures.

Robert Bordo’s solo exhibition at Foreland, 

 presents two bodies of work; a series of new paintings entitled 

 (French for fireflies) alongside a survey of postcard paintings (2000-2022). Bordo has lived and worked in upstate New York since the early 2000s, where the bucolic environs, artistic community, and weekly commute from the city has provided fodder for his painting.

 revisit a motif from Bordo’s earlier works 

 paintings from 1989-91. As a young painter, he was drawn to conceptual and land artists like Robert Smithson and Richard Long, whose work was landscape-driven, ambulatory and often ephemeral. The early paintings are blue, monochromatic canvases embedded with Timberland boot prints and emerged when the lives of many, and especially gay, communities, were dominated by AIDS. Darkly humorous, quirky, and meandering, the early and recent paintings refer to the body and the landscape it traverses. The monochrome appears as a Modernist trope, but is queered in Bordo’s allusions to cruising and tight denim jeans. 

The postcard paintings began in 2000, when Bordo happened upon a box of postcards in his mother’s home after her death. He began pinning the images to his studio wall, utilizing the arrangements as a source of composition as well as a site for metaphor. The postcards in his paintings depict actual landscapes as well as imaginary ones, evoking a nostalgia for far-flung places of the past and future. Critic and curator Peter Eeley has described the postcard paintings as remaking pictures in paint and “an appropriate model for the ways in which we archive and recall images.” Earlier examples such as 

 emphasize a luminous background, while the most recent 

 is a dense lush puzzle of images, composed in a time when the landscapes depicted were out of reach.

Robert Bordo (b.1949, Montreal) has lived in New York since 1972. He was an Associate Professor of Art at The Cooper Union, New York, where he led the painting program from 1996 until 2017. Recent solo and two person exhibitions include The National Exemplar, New York, NY; Bortolami, New York, NY; The Suburban, Oak Park, IL; Alexander and Bonin Gallery, New York, NY. His paintings have been featured in exhibitions at The Kitchen; MoMA PS1; the Brooklyn Museum; the Sheldon Museum of Art, Omaha; the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel; Artists Space, New York; the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Drawing Center. His work is held in the collections of SFMoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, and the Blanton Museum of Art among others. Bordo has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, fellowships, and residencies including PRAKSIS Oslo, the Robert de Niro Sr. Painting Prize, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, Canada Council Arts Grants, the Tesuque Foundation Arts Fellowship Award, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, and a Painting Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Talking Back: Artists of the Columbia Collective

Foreland and the Juvenile Justice Arts and Media Network are pleased to present 

, a group exhibition channeling creativity as a form of agency, humor as insurgence, and joy as resistance within the juvenile justice system. Curated by Sofia Thieu, 

 features new site-specific works from the 

: a multimedia group of young female and trans artists named after their previous facility, the New York Department of Corrections’ Columbia Secure Center for Girls in Claverack, New York. The Collective is now incarcerated at the maximum Brookwood Secure Center for Youth down the street, constructed in 1983 as one of eleven state juvenile facilities operated by the Office of Children and Family Services, and where individuals under 16 have been sentenced in adult criminal court.


Under the arts programming and mentorship of artist Maggie Hazen, the 

 was founded in 2019. Since then, the Collective—comprised of artists Jay, Juste-A, and Marshmallow—has turned to dynamic artistic practices to navigate their circumstances of incarceration. Taking its title from bell hooks’ 1989 novel, 

Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black

, the exhibition explores defiant speech and the gallery space as a platform to “talk back” against a carceral system that silences these artists’ voices.

, focusing on the intersections of cultural and carceral systems, tapping our prison history archives, the crisis of youth incarceration, and visions of a decarcerated future. How do we identify modes of abolition and advocacy, create critical projects, and identify the reaches of our prison industrial complex? Following artist presentations and discussion there will be Q&A session with panelists and Columbia Collective founder Maggie Hazen.

spent ten years in a Pennsylvania prison. His cell served as a workspace where he made thousands of paintings and drawings. Mark’s portrait series, Pyrrhic Defeat: A Visual Study Of Mass Incarceration, is a series of over 800 drawings of his fellow prisoners. He was released from prison in July 2022. Loughney showed a major installation of work in the MoMA PS1 exhibition Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration curated by 

 is an interdisciplinary artist, activist and educator and founder of 

, a transmedia project that collects and tells the stories of ‘incorrigible’ girls in the United States over the last 100 years—beginning with New York State. Drawing on the personal narratives of young women in “the system” the project investigates the history and present state of youth justice and social services for girls and gathers information from archival documents related to the New York State Training School for Girls (1904-1975). Incorrigibles is seeking to expand research to include all state-run youth detention centers for girls in the US – recording and sharing accounts of women alive today who were confined in these institutions. The project organizes intergenerational community engagement events with young women and the public to encourage critical analysis around youth detention and behavioral intervention.

In conjunction with the artist talk and studio visit, Brooklyn based publisher Last and Least Studio will be releasing a new book of Broyard's work titled "Solitaire", available for purchase in person, signed by Broyard. The book focuses on Broyard's work during recent years and includes paintings, small studies and reference photography. "Solitaire" is a limited edition of 250. The books will be available for purchase online, Sunday 9/25 8am EST.

, a solo exhibition of new work by Henri P. Broyard, on view from August 6–September 25, 2022. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 11am-5pm. 

Broyard is the awardee of the 2022 Foreland Fellowship, and was selected from a highly competitive group of nearly 100 applicants by a panel including Ebony Haynes (Director, 52 Walker) and Ruba Katrib (Senior Curator, MoMA) to receive a 1,000 square foot studio space at Foreland for six months. The exhibition is organized by Georgia Wright and will be on view in Foreland's galleries at 111 Water Street.

Caitlin MacBride / Dominic Palarchio: Reading and Making For the gallery’s initial presentation in the Hudson Valley, Abattoir is excited to exhibit paintings by Caitlin MacBride and sculptures by Dominic Palarchio, two artists whose work is shaped significantly by their experience and research around labor and craft. Palarchio’s practice applies metonymy to locate where hardship lies, reminding us of economy and place–and the inevitability of our relationship with them. His work emanates from Detroit’s post-industrial condition; many of his sculptures rely on classed sources to replicate the tangible and affective efforts that define their utility. Palarchio is interested in how objects—imbued with evidence of prior ownership— evoke working conditions as inhospitable
systems that negatively shape lives lived beyond the workplace. 

MacBride studies the handmade objects and histories of the Shaker communities in the Northeast, sects which held work and workmanship
sacred to their religious worship. The parity of the sexes and independence of women featured prominently in the Shaker belief system. MacBride’s oil paintings on panel and canvas examine these histories in
works that vibrate with mystery and literary intelligence.

Palarchio and MacBride have both exhibited with Abattoir in the past; Palarchio as part of this summer’s FRONT International in Cleveland: MacBride at the gallery’s NADA Miami presentation last winter.

Foreland is pleased to host a dynamic roster of exhibitions from a selection of four contemporary galleries for the month of July: Document (Chicago, IL), Situations (New York, NY), New Discretions (New York, NY) and JAG Projects (Hudson, NY). Each will have concurrent month-long residencies in the 3 gallery spaces, 4,000 square feet in all, and the Main Street gallery (an additional 2,000SF) within Foreland’s historic campus on the banks of Catskill Creek. 

The Foreland Gallery Coalition (FGC) is by invitation, with the goal of low risk, high reward for exhibition programs and dealers occupying Foreland's gallery spaces for temporary exhibitions bi-yearly.

Opening Reception July 1st, 5-7pm. Gallery hours are Saturdays & Sundays, 11am-6pm, through July 24th. Appointment available via individual gallery members.

Foreland is hiring a Gallery Manager to join our team and oversee the budding Gallery Coalition concept on our campus.

The Gallery Manager is the primary forward-facing position that engages with our Foreland Gallery Coalition (FGC) members and works closely with visitors, senior and support staff, artists, and gallerists. The Foreland Gallery Manager should be someone with strong artistic, technical, people and communication skills. The Gallery Manager reports to the Executive Director and Curatorial Strategist, and will manage FGC docent staff.

Our team is looking for a thoughtful, good-humored, and exceptionally outgoing individual to coordinate the happenings of our exhibition spaces, act as a lead docent, and manage junior docents, as well.

The ideal Gallery Manager is passionate about teamwork, system-building, interpersonal relationships, and on-your-feet thinking. If you are a convivial, accountable, people-loving, far-out thinker, you’re for us. The ideal candidate enjoys organizing and being accountable to others, works well with all kinds of folks (artists, art dealers, construction workers, producers, plumbers, you name it!), and perhaps describes themselves as having moxie.

Participate in organizing events and promotional efforts.

Supervise daily gallery operations and communicate maintenance needs to our Campus Foreman.

Meet and train gallery docents, coordinate docent scheduling. Act as docent on weekends as needed.

Research and coordinate installation and technical specialists.

Field questions about FGC gallery spaces from artists, gallerists, and visitors.

Maintain the integrity of the FGC with regular tidying and communication with our janitorial staff.

Understanding of contemporary art and art world.

This position is part time and temporary, with potential to grow into something bigger. Compensation starting at $25/hr.

The Moving Picture Show

 is a group exhibition of work by 10 media artists who embrace and challenge the conventional uses of video, creating work that is formally innovative, conceptually rigorous and politically significant. Rooted in the moving image, this assembly includes video installation, video sculpture and single channel video, all by artists who make their home in the Hudson Valley. 

Themes of landscape and history, human interaction with both natural and synthetic plant life, hacking of video games and techniques of animation are explored. Works in 

 celebrate the camaraderie of shared creative principles but are also unflinching in their social critique. 

The exhibition features pieces made during and in response to the pandemic confinement as well as work preceding this period. Participating artists include: Ephraim Asili, Cecilia Aldarondo, eteam (Franziska Lamprecht and Hajoe Moderegger)*, Goss&Gitlin, Maggie Hazen, Laleh Khorramian, Les LeVeque, Keith Sanborn and Carolee Schneemann.

This event, a listening party for the Measuring Time vinyl EP and a live music set featuring Ephraim Asili on Electronic devices and Norman Douglas reading poems, is a celebration of the publication of Ephraim Asili's book/vinyl record Measuring Time. A limited number of copies will be for sale at the gallery.

Ephraim Asili’s artist book Measuring Time (Visual Studies Workshop Press, 2021) is a collection of Polaroid portraits depicting independent and avant-garde film luminaries and traces the freeform way Asili documents the people and places that have marked the recent years of his life. Included with the book is a 7 inch vinyl record Addendum of the artist's Hip Hop inspired audio journal recordings. A uniquely poetic work in its own right, the book and record document the expansive cosmos around Asili's critically important films

Painting People Class

Foreland is pleased to announce its first educational offering, a class called “Painting People” taught by artist Caitlin MacBride, a studio tenant within the Foreland campus. This class is open to grade school students above the age of 12, college students and adults interested in art. There is no charge for the class and all supplies are included.

Participants are asked to attend 3 of the 4 classes, minimum. If you are interested but unsure if you will be able to attend, please refrain from registering, as space is limited to 15 students.

“Painting People” will cover the basics of proportion, color mixing, and painting methods using a fun, experimental approach. Participants will work with acrylic paint and will learn about a variety of techniques and approaches including realistic, surrealist and cubist styles. Students will learn to use both observation and imagination to create a portfolio of portraits. The class will culminate with an exhibition reception showcasing participants' work in the Foreland galleries.

Caitlin MacBride is an artist and educator who received her MFA in painting at Bard College and her BFA from RISD. MacBride has taught students of all ages at Abrons Arts Center, Rutgers University, Bard College, University of Tennessee, Brooklyn College Community Program, Tyler School Of Art, and public schools in 4 of the 5 boroughs of NYC. She has exhibited her work at Fisher Parrish, Heroes Gallery, Chapter NY, Real Fine Arts, Greene Naftali, Zach Feuer, Jack Barrett Gallery, Hesse Flatow and Neuer Berliner Kunstverein among other venues. Foreland Fellowship

The Foreland Fellowship provides a free 1,000 square foot studio at Foreland to an exceptional artist who identifies as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI or as a person of color. Foreland acknowledges that structural barriers exist to make participation in the art world more difficult for artists of color. We are striving to develop a community that looks like the world we want to live in: strongly diverse, mutually supportive and culturally significant. The Fellowship studio is located within our campus comprised of 31 artist studios, exhibition spaces, event spaces and a café. In addition to the studio, this fellowship includes professional development opportunities such as studio visits with curators and/or galleries; exposure to the network of prestigious artists who base their studio practice at Foreland; and access to Foreland’s ancillary initiatives including events, programs, fairs, and exhibitions. **Please note that this opportunity does not include housing or supplemental funding.**

The Fellowship runs from June 1 to November 30, 2022.

-Applicants must identify as Black, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI or as a person of color

-Applicants should live full or part-time within 60 miles of Catskill, NY, or be willing to relocate near the opportunity for the timeline awarded. (Housing is not included with the Fellowship.)

-Students are not eligible for the Fellowship

-Artists working in any visual medium may apply

-Artists who have a sustained practice of working in a collaborative partnership of up to two people may apply together (please submit a single application)

The Fellow will receive a free 1,000 square foot studio for six months from June 1 to November 30, 2022. The studio is fully private, with multiple windows, fiber optic internet, a utility sink and individual temperature control.

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel including Ebony Haynes, Director of 52 Walker Street, and Ruba Katrib, Curator at MoMA PS1.

Virginia Overton's Untitled (Cardinal C-80)

Foreland is thrilled to present Virginia Overton's monumental sculpture, 

 is available for public view every Saturday and Sunday from 9am-6pm, October 14th, 2021 through February 28th, 2022. 

Virginia Overton was born in Nashville, Tennessee and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She creates sculpture and installation repurposing materials commonly associated with factories, farms and construction. By means of both subtle and drastic interventions, Overton re-contextualizes these ordinary objects revealing their intrinsic properties which highlights the wear accrued by passing time.

 sculpture consists of a white steel frame, previously used as a forklift glass transport rack stood on end. Within each of its many recesses Overton has fit white marble, cut carefully to size. The white monochrome has striations of grey in the marble and rust colored oxidation on the surface of the steel. The muscular structure bends outward in an L-shape, reminiscent of a screen divider, usually made of lightweight materials like paper and wood. The artwork is titled in a direct fashion, noting an industrial stencil stamped on the edge of its frame: “Cardinal C-80.”

Space is the Place | Reggie Madison

Space is the Place

 is curated by Mike Mosby. For this one-day event, artist Reggie Madison will be joined by three jazz musicians playing a Sun Ra inspired composite at Foreland. Madison has been deeply inspired by jazz from the beginning of his artistic career. 

 allows audiences the unique opportunity to see Madison's work in relation to the artform that he holds so dear.

Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1941 artist Reggie Madison was greatly influenced by his parents’ love of jazz. The Madisons would often visit Club DeLisa in Chicago and were particularly fond of one musician named Herman Blunt, who Reggie would later know to be Sun Ra. As a child, Reggie would make frequent trips with his family to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Despite the Madison's love of arts, there were no paintings in their family home beside a lone drawing by Charles White, his aunt's schoolmate. Madison's first exhibition was in 1970 in a downtown storefront in Chicago and he later studied independently in Paris, Venice and Copenhagen. Eventually Madison settled in New York, first at a Greenwich Village studio and later in the Hudson Valley where he now calls home. Reggie Madison's work has been exhibited internationally and resides in both private and public collections both domestically and abroad.

's jazz trio is comprised of Anthony Ware, saxophonist and composer; Eric Wheeler, jazz bassist; and Jerome Jennings, drummer. All three performers have had extensive and inspiring careers that feature touring, recording, education and activism.

Foreland will donate a ticket to a student in Greene County for every ticket purchased. A special food pop from Seafood Steamery will take place on Foreland's waterfront on the day of the event from 1-9pm. 

Foreland Launch Party

On August 28th we celebrated the official launch of Foreland after nearly half a decade of development. Under the watchful gaze of two inflatable queer lovers, we toasted to creating an art world that we want to live in: one filled with joy, generosity, hard work and Jell-O shots. At Foreland we believe that rigorous, culturally significant creativity doesn't require the sacrifice of space and light and natural beauty. With that in mind, we danced on the waterfront late into the night, alongside a Caravaggio model atop a Felix Gonzalez-Torres inspired platform. This party was the manifestation of weird ideas hatched once the dust and noise of the construction site settled. It was wild. It was the art party that we'd always wanted to go to.

NADA x Foreland

, and co-organized with NADA Member Jesse Greenberg of JAG Projects, the NADA x Foreland exhibition will highlight artworks from a community of NADA galleries, nonprofits and artists with a focus on artists working in the region of Upstate New York. The exhibition will be a dynamic use of the Foreland buildings, allowing viewers to not only explore the art on view but also the Foreland campus.

Rachel Uffner Gallery and Mrs. are pleased to present a collaborative exhibition which highlights select artists from each gallery program. Inspired by the unique architecture and setting of Foreland, this exhibition focuses on materiality and texture, gesture and abstraction, bold and distinctive color as well as line and dimension. By bringing these artists together a kinship is developed, creating new narratives and conversations between the galleries’ rosters and the artists themselves.

Upstate Diary, the premiere niche publication featuring creative lifestyles close to nature, will present its first art and design exhibition, 

 will feature furniture, design, functional sculpture, and art—all created from natural materials such as wood, clay, wool, and stone. Many of the objects are created exclusively for the exhibition by a select group of inspiring artists and artisans including: Jeremy Anderson, Paula Greif, Paula Hayes, Kat Howard, Christina Kruse, Kieran Kinsella, Jonathan Kline, Christopher Kurtz, Re Jin Lee, Chris Lehrecke, Jonah Meyer, Jason Middlebrook, John-Paul Philippe, Martin Puryear, Kentaro Takashina, Nicola Tyson, Joshua Vogel, and Nadia Yaron.

It’s Necessary to Talk About Trees

River Valley Arts Collective is pleased to present It’s Necessary to Talk about Trees, an exhibition that evolves from the new non-profit’s focus on material and process, and its mission to serve artists of the Hudson Valley.

It’s Necessary to Talk about Trees presents work by a group of artists who express a unique sensitivity to the environmental and social issues that inform their practice. The exhibition title comes from Adrienne Rich’s 1991 poem “What Kind of Times Are These”⁠—an urgent question and a provocation⁠ in which Rich speaks allegorically of a forest that is haunted by the shadows of history. The poem’s conclusion, “It’s Necessary to Talk about Trees,” is a call to action that highlights how inspiration is found in the natural world and recognizes the power of art-making in troubling times.

The exhibition considers artists’ agency and their role as primary producers, the environmental factors that drive their work, and the generative power that renders visible what others seek to make disappear. Through the found and crafted, tactile and felt, these artists create tangible evidence of time and place.
