Field of Play presents: TRANSFORMER, a solo exhibition of work by Kate Sherman, curated by Matthew Logsdon and Kate Skakel. Free and open to the public.

Your eyes see things like a stacked deck of cards that recede into deep space, structures interrupt that track. Halting the inertia of a moving line, the vector is forced to rebound and chart a different course. Energy blocked turns in a different direction; maybe it will shoot across the wall, or double up on itself, ricocheting across its perimeter? Kate Sherman’s large shaped paintings employ transparent elements of facture – implements of attachment like stapling, puncturing, and nailing – to produce textured, sculptural picture planes that are heavy, handmade, and to a certain extent, gerry-built. Scores of pins and nails are evocative of buildings with cast iron attachments to pinpoint their steel foundations, while painted, drawn, and welded marks graze the boundaries of each enclosure, zipping energy up and across the compositions. Enamel paints self-level atop layers of thin-gauge metal sheets to create zones of harder structures and vibrant sheen. Behind the tenacious creation of these works is Sherman’s desire to capture the sensation of an eye calibrating into focus on the details of a scene, before expanding out to witness an overarching rhythm of shapes. Big picture directional thrusts necessitate small picture engineering.
